Creative Engineering with Arduino and Cardboard

This is an advanced class and requires permission to register. Please email Annette@LabSpaceRobotics.com to see if it is appropriate.
Bring cardboard creations to life with real electronics! Returning makers will pair modular Grove Arduino kits with cardboard construction to design and code custom, interactive physical mechanisms. We’ll spend the first couple of weeks learning how the new programming works and then start with several hands-on projects to get a hands-on understanding – for instance, we’ll code a Rock, Paper Scissors games and create a physical game out of cardboard and recyclables.  Be sure to save April 24 for Robot Parade.  We’ll be sure to have projects to display at that!
2 weeks are built into the schedule for bad weather or ilness. If LabSpace cancels more than 2 classes, we will add on to the end of the semester.

STEM Club Grades 1/2

We will have a mixture of Lego robotics and STEM activities including building and experimenting. There will be a focus on small motor skills with lots of activities involving cutting, paper folding, and drawing. We’ll also do quite a few activities using a variety of tools to measure. This class will have different activies than fall semester.

Then, when they are ready to move onto text-based programming, they have this understanding already in place.

Ages 10-14
This is a continuing intermediate class. Some Scratch experience is needed. We’ll be using the Scratch programming language that was developed at MIT to introduce students ages 8-16 to coding concepts.
Scratch is a great starting place for coding. The environment was developed to make learning big concepts easier. Students will learn about loops, events, wait statements and variables at a level they can understand. Then, when they are ready to move onto text-based programming, they have this understanding already in place.
Scratch will give them a tool they can use now to express themselves digitally. They can create games, tell stories and more with Scratch.
While we’d love to be offering this class in-person, we will be continuing online due to Covid. We’ve come to really enjoy our online classes this summer and meeting students from across the country. If you have any questions, please contact us. We’re happy to speak with you on the phone (573) 645-0800 or set up a Zoom meeting so we can all practice using the controls before a class situation. We know this is a crazy time, but we’re so thankful to be able to continue to teach and want to make your life easier. If this is your first year homeschooling, we encourage you to enjoy your journey. It may not be what you planned, but take a deep breath—you can do this and you will make some great memories!
