Upcoming June and July STEM Fun Workshops

STEM Fun Workshops are 1 session workshops with fun STEM activities.  Each activity will have it’s age range listed.

Classes that don’t meet minimum registrations will be cancelled.  Please let us know you are planning to come!

String-Powered Robot!

Mon, June 16 10:00-10:50

Unleash your inner engineer and artist! In this hands-on class, you’ll discover the cleverness of hinges and use them to design and build your own unique, string-powered dancing robot from cardboard. Learn how to make your robot groove and move with a simple pull of a string! Our small class size (limited to 6 participants) ensures plenty of individual attention and guidance for all learners. We encourage younger makers (ages 5-6) to join in the fun with the assistance of a parent or guardian. 7 and up will be able to do most of this project independently.

Tuition is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child in the same family. Registration is required.

Marshmallow Launcher – Wed, June 18 10:00-10:50

Create a pyramid-catapult to launch marshmallows!  This is a great project for ages 5-7 with an adult helper and 8+ on their own or with a helper.  When our catapults are finished, we’ll build some cup-castles to knock down! Tuition: $10

Pneumatic Crane – Thursday, June 19 10:00-10:50

Build a pneumatic crane to take home.  Makers younger than 8 should have a hands-on helper.  You’ll use air power to make your crane move. Tuition: $10

Magnetic Sculpture- Tues, June 3 1:00-1:50 or Monday, June 30 at 10:45-11:35

Play with our magnetic pendulums and then make your own magnetic sculpture that you can take home.   What will you create?  A butterfly that visits flowers, a sea turtle swimming through the ocean?  We can’t wait to see what you create!

Ages 7+ can do this project pretty independently, but adults are always welcome to stay and help with the creation.  Under 7 are welcome, but must have a hands-on adult helper.

Cardboard Grabber – Wed, June 4 1:00-1:50

Build a cardboard grabber that you can take home!  We’ll make a cool, extendable grabber arm and learn how to use brads to attach pieces together so they can move.

Ages 8+ can do this project independently, but adults are always welcome to stay and help!  Under 7 are welcome, but must have a hands-on adult helper.

Classes that don’t meet minimum registrations will be cancelled.  Please let us know you are planning to come!

Straw Rockets- Thur, July 3 11:30-12:20

Explore the power of elastic potential energy as you make straw rockets and a cool device to “fling” them with! This is a family class, we ask that parents stay and work with their children who are 5-8 years old.  Older children can do this project independently. $8 to admit 1, $16 for a family admission.

Please note, the mall opens at 11:00.  If your class starts before the mall opens,  you’ll need to come to the entrance nearest LabSpace so we can let you in.  Park on the HyVee side of the mall between Ross and the car wash.  Come to the mall entrance nearest the car wash.  We’ll have someone there to let you in.  If there isn’t someone there, just call (573) 645-0800 and we’ll be right there.
