UpcomingBrownie Coding for Good Badge 3

  • May 26, 2021, CDT
    4:30 pm CDT - 5:15 pm CDT

Tuition: $6

We’ll be taking a look at animation and how pictures can tell a story. We’ll see how an artist creates an animated film and then try our hand at storyboarding a simple story.
After sketching our story, we’ll bring it to life by coding it in Scratch, Jr, the program we’ve been using in our Badge 1 and 2 classes. We’ll have a basic outline for the story, but students will make it their own.
Scratch, Jr is a fun language available free online and was developed for children ages 4-7. You can read more about it here: https://www.scratchjr.org/
Before we meet, download Scratch, Jr to a tablet, iPad or phone. It would be good to have 1 device for Zoom and one for Scratch, Jr. That way, you’ll be able to see the teacher’s screen and follow along.
Badges 1 and 2 should be completed before 3. Badge is not included.

    6:00 pm CDT - 6:45 pm CDT
Tuition: $5
Ready to take on the challenge of designing your own board game? You’ll get to choose your theme, decide on the rules and create and test your game.
This workshop will meet the requirements for the Daisy Mechanical Engineering Badge 1. Materials needed: heavy paper, or recycled cardboard (a frozen pizza box would be perfect), a pencil, markers, colored pencils or crayons, and any other decorations you like. Small toys, rocks, erasers, etc for options to move around the game board or to collect. For instance, my game has a gardening theme, so I’m going to use pumpkin seeds as my object to collect. You’ll also want some extra paper and scissors for creating your characters that will make around the game.
We’ll be making a spinner for our game. For that, you’ll need either a brad, screw, or thumbtack, a paperclip that will spin around the brad, screw or thumbtack and a heavy piece of cardboard to attach it all to.

UpcomingGame Design-Intro Level

    May 28, 2021, CDT
    1:00 pm CDT - 2:00 pm CDT
  • Game Design-Intro Level
    June 4, 2021, CDT
    1:00 pm CDT - 2:00 pm CDT
Intro Level: We’ll be programming a “Maze” style game. We’ll cover basic game making techniques, collisions, movements, creation of objects and inserting objects. You’ll be creating a 2D game that you can play and share with others. We recommend that students take 2-4 intro level classes before moving up to experienced level classes.  As interest allows, we plan to continue offering a game design class at this same time in the coming months.   Our hope is that students will stay together and get to know one another and advance through new material together.
LabSpace Game Design classes are live, online. We limit the class size to 8 students to allow plenty of time for asking questions and sharing ideas.
This class will meet via Zoom. An invitation will be sent out a couple of days before class starts.
MultiMedia Fusion 2.5 will be our game design program. We’ll be using the free, trial version. Here is a download link: https://www.clickteam.com/clickteam-fusion-2-5.
Please have your software downloaded before class. We’re happy to help if you need it, just let us know.
